Rhetoric draws on cultural, linguistic, literary, and legal traditions to appeal to emotions, enhance credibility, sway opinions, build consensus, and inspire action. Its influence stretches across public speaking, writing, advertising, politics, and law—shaping perception and guiding audiences not only to understand a thesis but also to embrace it and act upon it. At its highest level, rhetoric champions a better world while remaining rooted in ethical standards. In the juridical sphere, from oral and written submissions to reasoned judgment in particular, rhetoric demonstrates how words can influence justice and ultimately society itself. Judge Silvio Meli will be drawing on his past judicial experience to show how rhetoric is lived, practiced, and applied today. About the Speaker
Judge Silvio Meli specialized in Philosophy of Law and Fundamental Human Rights, in the Laws of the European Union and the European Union Competition Law. He started his career as a free-lance lawyer and was later engaged at the Attorney General’s Office. Subsequently, he became a member of the Judiciary. Today, he is happily retired.
